Even in today’s consumer society, where everybody just has to have the best of the best, it is still good to sometimes, just sometimes, get your feet back on the ground. Sure you would love to own an iPhone or the latest Swarovski encrusted Nokia, but do you really need it?
At the moment, our love for technology has progressed to the point where our mobile phones are capable of so much; we could buy a phone, use it for a year and then junk it without having used more than 10% of the phones capabilities. You could have a miniature supercomputer sitting in your pocket, but it will still be nothing more than a shiny camera cell phone to you.
If all you need is something to call and text people on, and for them to be able to call and text you, then all you need is a cheap cell phone which does not break the bank and is still capable of performing all of the basic functions you require.
Why Buy a Cheap Cell Phone when the Expensive ones are so Cool?
When considering the purchase of a cell phone, you really need to ask yourself exactly what you need it to be able to do. If you need to constantly be in contact with the office by phone, email and text message, then shelling out the extra money for a blackberry or PDA phone may be worth it, but if you just need to be able to call your friends and send the odd text message then why not save the money?
What to Look out for when Buying a Cheap Cell Phone
Just because something is cheap, it does not mean that it is rubbish. Interestingly enough, some of the cheaper mobile phones around are more reliable and less fragile than a lot of the more expensive ones available. The more complicated a device, the more which can potentially go wrong with it.
Even if you have your heart set on owning a camera cell phone, it is not necessarily going to break the bank. As camera cell phone technology has now been around for a few years, a lot of older camera cell phones are now being offered for very reasonable prices, and the technology is also becoming quite standard, meaning that even if you buy a brand new cheaper cell phone you will not have to spend a lot.
Buying Second Hand Mobile Phones
If you are considering the purchase of a second hand unlocked cell phone, which usually become available when the owner upgrades their contract and receives a new handset, there are several things you need to watch out for;
- 1. Make sure that the deal is all kosher – if it is an online classified sales ad and sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Make sure that you are able to meet the seller in person and do a straight swap – you give them the money and they hand you over the phone.
- 2. Ask them questions as to the state of the phone – if there is anything wrong with it – whether the battery may need replacing etc.
- 3. If you have any impression whatsoever that there is something dodgy going on, then walk away from the purchase – do not risk your money on potentially stolen goods.
If you want to buy a cell phone, and are not bothered as to how up-to-date or shiny it is, then a cheap cell phone may be worth considering. You will have some money left over, and you will be able to keep in contact with people. If you are buying a mobile phone which is not locked to any network, chances are you may end up paying a bit more anyway, as an unlocked cell phone will always cost a bit more than one which is restricted to any single provider.
